Abstract: From the perspective of the coordination development, this paper comprehends urbanization from three major aspects, population, industry development and land use. An index framework is defined to identify the six types of urbanization patterns, and the types can be expressed in an equilateral triangle. The major driving force and the vulnerable aspect can be identified through this method. A case study of the Yangtze-River-Delta shows an approximate North-South spatial pattern of urbanization, with spatial adjacencies and convergence over the period 2000-2005. From the perspective of the long-run equilibrium, differences in urbanization pattern types exist generally among natural conditions and other inherent properties; which means that different types are not necessarily to lead to significant differences in the level of economic development. But from the view of the dynamic evolution during a period, land use change has been accelerating the rapid development in this specific region. Finally, the authors advocate more attention to the issue of healthy urbanization, especially in this stage of rapid development for contemporary China.
