Abstract:

Urbanization is a socio-economic and geographic phenomenon that receives the most intense and increasing concerns. Locality is inherent in the local natural characteristics and cultural characteristics, facing with the pressure of variation and extinction as well as the opportunity of transitional development in China's urbanization. China and Germany are under different backgrounds and development stages, and the two have specificity, universality and complementarity in urban construction and locality protection. In this context, the Symposium, themed by “Urbanization and Locality: Strengthening Identity and Sustainability by Site-specific Planning and Design”, combines the disciplines of geography, urban planning, landscape architecture, architecture, tourism and history to discuss the human-places conflicts and the solution experience that Germany and China have gained and are concerning about at different stages of urbanization process. Based on the background of sustainable development, through the exchange and communication among Chinese and German scholars, the Symposium aims at enriching the research perspective, research material and research technology of urbanization and locality. Furthermore, it does provide reference to the theoretical and practical experience of urban development between China and Germany and even the whole world. Therefore, this symposium provides both sides a solid foundation for the possibility of Sino-German joint research on the theme in the future. The Symposium has contributed to form 13 pairs of collaborative research group among the 47 participants, and two pairs of Sino-German colleges' cooperations.
