Abstract:

Textile and garment manufacturing industry plays an important role in turning China to be the largest producing and textile trading country in the world through international industry transfer. There is no doubt that the Yangtze River Delta, Shanghai in particular, has become the extremely vital place for Japanese foreign investment due to a series of preferential policies in recent years. Based on the directory of Japan-funded textile and garment manufacturing enterprises in Shanghai, this paper discusses their spatial distribution characteristics and the dynamic mechanism from 1995 to 2012. Empirical results reveal that the coexistence between concentration and diffusion drives the trend of suburbanization and the development zone acts as the main carrier; the agglomeration degree has enhanced and agglomeration scale has expanded rapidly as time went on, with a belt of concentration running along the highway and freeway of Shanghai; enterprises ownership and size are supposed to have direct influences, wholly foreign-owned enterprises and Sino-foreign joint ventures show the same orientation, large and mature enterprises tend to gather in the suburbs, while smaller ones are inclined to the center. An extension to the main analysis with the Poisson regression model finds that location close to high-speed or elevated-road exerts the most significant effects, followed by development zone, agglomeration and land price, while universities and research institutions play a minor role. Moreover, compared with Sino-foreign joint ventures, wholly foreign-owned enterprises are more sensitive to agglomeration, development zone and research organizations, while less affected by transportation and land price.
