Abstract: Xu Xiake, the geographer in Ming Dyasty, was 55 years old, and took 39 days to explore the Tengchong area on-the-spot after crossing the Nujiang River and the Gaoligong Mountain Range. Firstly, he roughly investigated the orography and river patterns, and livelily described the hot springs, vulcano-es, karst caves and mineral resources in detail. Xu Xiake's Travels has been a very famous and lovely realistic literature all over the world.Duing the period of 1978 to 1980, the author organized the experiments of airborne remote sensing in Tengchong area. Aerial photographic mosaic with the scale of 1:50000 and 25 thematic maps in the scale of 1:100000 have bave gotten in the area using 1: 35000 infrared color photography, multi-band scanning and therm-infrared images, also including the processing and analysing of Landsat images, quantitative researches have been taken for natural resources, environmental ecology, geoghemistry and landscales etc.Films of "Remote Sensing" and "Vulcanoes and Hot Spring in Tengchong" have been distributed, Atlas of Airborne Remote Sensing in Tngchong Area has been published. It is a very conscientious and careful verification on the scientific value of Xu Xiake's Travels.Based on the content described in Xu Xiake's Travels, this paper discusses the several geographic concepts with verification by field notes and sket-ches got from the same area by myself.1.The information accessing from his Travels along the cross section of Caoligong Mountain is so abundant that enough to draw up a composite physio-geographic profile approaching demand of on-the-spot surveys (Fig.4).2.Travels described mountain ridges and drainage systems in Tengchong intermontane bason with eight directions. Its relative geographic position is correct, and their outlines checked by topographic map approximately (Fig.2).3.Travels adopted three layers in logic structure from micro description to macro summarization of geographic terms.4.Travels is a integrated scientific records, involve many aspects of natural phenomenon, importantly attach to observing first hand materials himself.Historical contribution of Xu Xiake's Travels is matter-of-fact attitude surmounting epoch and dedication spirit for sciences. These are well worth cherishing and learning for ever.
