Abstract: Sound is one of the fundamental elements that tourists are immersed to "sense" the tourism space(i.e.,destinations).It plays a critical role in forming tourists'experiences of and satisfaction toward the destinations. As sound constitutes an essential part of tourist attractions and tourism products, the nature and extent of this auditory element that tourists perceive affect their experiences and evaluation of the destinations.Hence, the sound environment created in the destination significantly contributes to tourists'overall tourism experience.Despite the importance of sound element in tourism destinations, researchers in tourism geography have placed too much emphasis on visual elements and landscapes. Studies on such sound elements have largely been neglected and under-researched.By introducing the concept of soundscape, this paper attempts to share a new perspective with the tourism geography research community to further promote a better understanding of the sound environment in the discipline. Coined from "landscape",soundscape describes the sound environment around listeners. Different from sound phenomena in other studies, the soundscape concept emphasizes the inter-relationships among listeners, sounds, and surrounding environment, and considers the social, cultural and aesthetic meanings of sound phenomena. Therefore, soundscape and its related theories are suitable for analyzing both temporal and spatial characteristics of sounds and the effects brought by sounds.Reviewing previous major studies of soundscape in other disciplines, this paper first proposed the concept of tourism soundscape and examined its three core elements.Four directions of tourism research were further discussed by introducing the theory of soundscape in tourism geography:(1)the development and protection of significant sound resources exemplified by folk opera and music and folk songs;(2)the construction and marketing of the sound environment of destinations to improve and re-create tourism experiences;(3)the studies of tourist behavior from the perspective of soundscape such as the tourist's sense of place, sound preferences, and soundscape satisfaction;(4)the impact analyses on the soundscape change caused by tourism development.
