Abstract

Geography is a profound subject and the history of geographical ideas is important to the development of the geographical science itself. Western geography not only seeks for general theory, but also focuses on particular problems. The tensions between the general and the specific is one of the major concerns of geographic thoughts. And these tensions were getting stronger as many schools emerged after World War II, including positivist geography, humanistic geography, Marxist geography, feminist geography, postmodern geography, post-structural geography, post-human geography, and relational geography. This paper is a review of Geographic Thought: A Critical Introduction, which reveals the evolutions of the Western countries geographic thoughts, focusing on the thoughts of post-World War II geography schools; summing up the dialectical interaction between general and special, by introducing a brief history of geographic thoughts. And pointing out a critique is a core of Chinese geographical research and education. Since ancient Greece when Eratosthenes laid the tradition of mathematics, pursuing the general, Homer built up the tradition of description, region, art, what, in fact, is the special. Regional geography concentrates on specific areas, emphasizing particularities. Positivist geographers criticize regional geography and seek for general rules of science, which are universal. Humanistic geographers believe that something in reality must happen in a specific place. They are eager to rediscover that particularities are everywhere and cannot be covered by generality. Marxism geography digs out a theory of conditions to make such theory possible, and then challenges these conditions, focusing mainly on generality. Feminist geography not only focuses on common problems, but also emphasizes the difference between cognition; it is a combination of generality and particularity. Postmodern geography rejects the existence of absolute space order, emphasizing heterogeneity, peculiarity and uniqueness, but neglecting the regularity of things. Post-structural geography analyzes the surface without digging the truth of the structure, focusing on contextualization and diversity, rather than identity and universality. Relationship geography insists on universal materiality. Post-human geography is still concerned about the issue of particularity. Geography schools switch constantly between the general and the specific. This means that in future Chinese geography research and education should focus on critique, only through critical thinking and practice can we achieve a deeper understanding of the discipline and its evolution process, and only then we can better carry out popularization and theoretical innovations.

(How do we, as humans, relate to and inhabit the natural world?),二是如何看待一般与特殊之间的关系(How do we think about the particular in relation to the universal?)。

The authors have declared that no competing interests exist.

TFL(Tobler's First Law of Geography)之争就是一个典型案例。

The bonding in the molecule ion VO(H2O)(5)(2+) is described in terms of molecular orbitals. In particular, the most significant feature of the electronic structure of VO2+ seems to be the existence of considerable oxygen to vanadium pi-bonding. A molecular orbital energy level scheme is estimated which is able to account for both the "crystal field" and the "charge transfer" spectra of VO(H2O)(5)(2+) and related vanadyl complexes. The paramagnetic resonance g factors and the magnetic susceptibilities of vanadyl complexes are discussed.

Uneven Development: Nature, Capital, and the Production of Space

. Oxford: Blackwell, 1991.

In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content: vii Foreword the republication of Neil Smith’s Uneven Development is cause for celebration on two counts. First, the book pioneered a wholly new approach to uneven geographical development at a historical moment when the collision of Marxian theorizing and geographical thinking was in its incipient but most fruitful and illuminating phase. It took someone with Smith’s deep knowledge of and passionate commitment to both Marxian and geographical theory to pull off the merger of two so very different modes of thinking with such insight and panache. What Smith ended up doing, in effect, was to take seriously Lefebvre’s assertion that capitalism has survived since the beginning of the twentieth century in large part through the production of space (and show theoretically why that has been and must be so) and explore its deeper viii Foreword and multiple intellectual and political meanings by accepting Alfred North Whitehead’s view that “the determination of the meaning of nature ”—including human nature—“reduces itself principally to the discussion of the character of time and the character of space.” Smith did not start from these propositions. But that this was where he ended up after careful critical engagement with a whole host of competing ideas about capital, space, and nature, is undeniable. It is a tribute to this crucial insight that so many of us have continued to elaborate on this theme ever since. Uneven Development was, and continues to be, therefore, a foundational text of great historical significance, constantly worthy of reappraisal. It provides, as Edward Said noted in Culture and Imperialism , “a brilliant formulation of how the production of a particular kind of nature and space under historical capitalism is essential to the unequal development of a landscape that integrates poverty with wealth, industrial urbanization with agricultural diminishment.” But Said’s commentary leads us directly to the second reason to applaud the reissue of Uneven Development. The unequal development of the global economy, with its burgeoning extremes of wealth and poverty, its astonishing pace of urbanization and environmental degradation, has accelerated rather than diminished over the quarter century since this book was first published. The political message of the book should, under such conditions, be doubly welcome simply because it is more relevant than ever to dissecting our present predicaments. Yet the penchant for tough critique in academia has notably waned over the years as the reputation of Marxian theorizing, of political-economic analysis, and of politically targeted critical geographical theory has been diminished not only by events (such as the end of communism) but also subject to dissolution in the tepid wash of identity politics and cultural theorizing. This so-called radical thinking amounts to thinly veiled apologetics for either doing nothing or offering mild support to either toothless communitarian oppositions or, even worse, covert neoliberalization. When the widely held belief takes hold (in part promoted within hegemonic institutions such as the media and the universities, themselves Foreword ix subjected to neoliberal pressures and market determinations) that the answers to global poverty and environmental degradation lie in the extension of market logics and private property arrangements (everything from ridiculously inefficient as well as inegalitarian carbon-trading regimes to microcredit institutions that shamelessly prey on the poor) then there is precious little critical basis left for struggling to construct a more globally just social order. The ambition to ameliorate the worst abuses of neoliberal globalization and imperialism by human rights activism at best ameliorates and at worst ends up promoting the very ideals of neoliberal individualism and personal responsibility that lie at the root of our present difficulties. Fortunately, there are social movements afoot around the world that insist that “another world is possible.” And they are making plain their determination to construct that other world. But here, too, there is another barrier encountered to constructive politics, born out of the failures of so many traditional left movements to abandon their dogmatic assertions and their analyses constructed to confront a bygone era. While all of us concerned to build a better world need to rethink politics and ways of knowing in ways appropriate to our complicated contemporary geographical and historical situation, it is hard to do so within a climate of distrust for all forms of intellectual abstraction let alone the rigors of Marxian theorizing. But activists forget at their peril the advice long ago proffered by that great geographer Elisee Reclus to his anarchist comrades when, toward the end of a long life of struggle, he wrote: “Great...

In the last four decades, human geography in the West has experienced major changes in both theoretical and empirical orientations. These changes began with the appearance of the quantitative revolution in the late 1950s and the 1960s which greatly enhanced the position of theory in geographic scholarship. Adopting logical positivism as its theoretical foundation, early quantitative geographers clearly displayed epistemological arrogance who considered views of knowledge other than their own as either invalid or insignificant. However, by the late 1960s, both the revolutionaries and the bystanders had become disillusioned about the revolution future as it had failed to achieve what it had set out to do earlier: the development of geographic laws and metatheories. This set the stage for the emergence of a host of competing schools of thought in human geography, ranging from behavioralism, Marxism and humanism. Postmodernism made its appearance in American human geography in 1984. It rejects any narrow epistemological stance that sees the complex world through only one predetermined lens. It argues that no metatheory is capable of accounting for the complex reality, and it does not favor any one type of represented world over others. It emphasizes the importance of difference, heteorogeneity, context and human agency, which have since found their way in a new regional geography centered on the study of localities. Local conditions in China since the 1978 reforms have varied greatly, with places in different regions acquiring unque place identities. Such a condition is suitable for the use of postmodern perspectives for place based studies.

This paper explores the possibility that there may be commonalities between physical geography and human geography in emerging ways of conceptualizing space, time and space-time. It argues that one of the things holding physical and human geography apart for so long has been their relationship to physics as an assumed model of 'science'. It is proposed here that not only is this an inadequate model of science but that it has led us astray in our inherited conceptualizations of both time and space. The urge to think 'historically' is now evident in both physical and human geography. The paper argues that this both forms the basis for a possible conversation and also obliges us to rethink our notions of space/space-time.

Four critical challenges for physical geography are examined here: deterioration of common cores of knowledge associated with increasing intellectual niche specialization; the need for conceptual thinking and problem-framing to catch up with measurement and analysis technology; and the need to explicitly incorporate human decision making in analysis of earth surface systems. The future calls for physical geography to embrace and confront the creative tension between nomothetic and interpretive science, and to fruitfully and explicitly integrate these approaches.

As a representative of Marxist geographers, David Harvey personally wrote to the Chinese colleagues and called for building the future geography together both as a discipline and as a reality on the ground. It is necessary for Chinese scholars to take advantage of this opportunity, and to put knowledge into action, which carry out the transnational, transboundary and trans-generational combination so that we can reconstruct Marxist geography and explore the ways and methods of fulfilling it in China. The scholars at different ages, are from different fields such as geography, philosophy, sociology, Marxism, urban planning, architecture, economics, tourism, and from different countries and regions including USA and UK. It is the first and the most massive action in the field of Marxism geography in China. With the Marxism spirit of openness and criticism, this paper mainly discusses Marxist geography and its meanings, contents, methodologies and paths in China at different levels and scales.
